Jesus Prayed - John 17
POINT 1 - JESUS PRAYED: FOR GOD'S GLORY
Glory - The divine goodness of God
Glorify - Our response to God's divine goodness
POINT 2 - JESUS PRAYED: FATHER KEEP THEM
POINT 3 - JESUS PRAYED: FOR UNITY
Unity is not...
1) Compromising the truth of scripture
DA Carson "[Unity] is not achieved by hunting enthusiastically for the lowest common denominator, but by adhering to the apostolic Gospel."
2) Uniformity
The Apostle's Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of the saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Biblical Unity is...
1) Commitment to the truth - God's Word
2) Unity of relationship/identity
3) Sacrificial love
4) Rejection of disunity
Thomas Brooks "Discord and division become no Christian. For wolves to worry lambs is no wonder, but for one lamb to worry another, this is unnatural and monstrous."
POINT 4 - JESUS PRAYED: FOR GLORY
Jesus prayed for you and I to experience God's glory and to celebrate His goodness, to be kept by God no matter our circumstances, and to be unified in our love for Jesus and His love for us!
